Family Fun Features with the KIA Sportage

The KIA Sportage is one of Australia’s most popular cars for young families, with a host of impressive and practical features
that make it a front-runner in the SUV category.

In 2019, KIA came to us with a challenge, they wanted to disrupt the ‘feature video’ space. They found that when shopping for a new car,
most people stumble upon a set of dry, technical feature videos that don’t really show why the features are important.

So how does a car brand stand out amongst the throngs of content?

Our goal was to create a series of feature videos that would be edgy and irreverent, using humour and relatable moments
to not just explain what the features are, but to really show their benefits in action.

Our idea? Let’s use a REAL family to host this series, recognisable, relatable and most importantly, entertaining. Our target demographic was young families, so we had the perfect pairing in mind…

We pitched Christiaan Van Vuuren (from the Bondi Hipsters) and his actress wife, Adele Vuko, best known for her ‘ActiveWear’ viral video - oh and their two adorable children, Felix and Elke.

It was a match made in heaven. KIA loved the idea and Christiaan and Adele were excited to come on board.

Working Those Scripts

It was important that we injected Christiaan and Adele’s personalities into the series, so once they were locked in and we had written solid scripts, we held a workshop to really push the comedy as much as possible. Suffice to say, some of the best moments in the final episodes came from this session.

The Features

Autonomous Emergency Braking

Most parents know the feeling.. you’re driving your kids around and they’re yelling in the back, dropping things, throwing things, making concentrating on the road impossible.

The AEB system is designed to be that contingency. You take your eyes off the road for one second and the system automatically engages to protect you and your family.

Hands Free Smart Power Tailgate

A boot that opens and closes automatically? Yes, please!

Whether it’s a trip to the shops, the park or the beach, mums and dads always have their hands full. The pram, bags, kids, groceries, the last thing you want when you get back to your car is to put everything down, fish for your keys and manually open the boot.

Intelligent Park Assist

These days, everyone thinks they’re a great parker, right? Well back in the day, we didn’t have any fancy systems, we had to reverse park into tight spots all by ourselves.

Life was hard back then, but today, we’re blessed to have the Intelligent Park Assist, which means “No spot too small!”

Full Size Spare

Family holidays are essential, but the road trip can be… challenging. Driving down the highway, in the middle of nowhere, the last thing you need is a flat tyre.

But, if it does happen, the last thing you really need is a cheap space-saving tyre. Those cruddy space-savers have speed and distance limitations, which means, major delays. Luckily, the Sportage comes with a Full size spare tyre, so no major disruptions to your journey!

Rear Cross Traffic Alert

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert, or as we like to call it, the ‘Divorce Rate Dropper’ is saving marriages all around the country.

No longer does your significant other need to get out of the car to direct you out of a tight spot.

No more arguments, the system alerts you if there are any cars or pedestrians coming past. Easy.

Production

Shot over 3 days in 4 locations, the production tackled highway and suburban driving, busy parking lots and limitations around working with children.

Our biggest challenge was that we couldn’t shoot the kids in any moving vehicles, so all the shots of Felix and Elke in the cars were shot independently and statically to make it look like the cars were moving.

Working with cars, kids and nature could have been a bad combo, but the production was a breeze!
